Pockets

Somebody today mentioned NY as a cultural melting pot composed of a bunch of little pockets. The pockets are tight-knit groups that look out for one another above anyone else, but it’s not uncommon to see different pockets gathered together in one place. It’s not uncommon to see different pockets celebrating together, mourning together, commuting together, sitting together, smiling together, being together. “That’s what makes this place so great,” he said.

All of the different kinds of pockets, together.

And though this has all been said in a thousand ways before, it seems so relevant to me now. I’m not just reading about it, I’m living it. Pockets are the reason being alone in a crowd hasn’t felt all that lonely and also the reason why the lonely moments feel lonelier. I know there are tons of people out there in this same pocket, but we’re just all feeling it at different times and places.
